Tragedy has the power to unite us, or to divide us. We get to choose.
I saw this in my marriage after the death of our daughter. The less difficult road would have been to let the enemy win and become a statistic. It took intentionality, humility, compassion and hard work to let God use our tragedy to create in us a greater unity than we had ever had before. It took dependence on God and dying to self. There were difficult conversations and much soul-searching. There was repeated forgiveness and unconditional love.
Just think of all we would have missed out on if we hadn’t done the hard work of unity! This beautiful family wouldn’t exist and our influence on the world around us would have been hindered. We don’t get to choose our circumstances, but we do get to choose how we respond to them. The “easy” road never glorifies God and it leaves much destruction in its wake.
Do the hard work. For your family. For your children. For your church. For your marriage. For your friendships. For yourself.
I am here to say that the hard road of unity is absolutely worth it!

Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
