Sunrise, Sunset: Time Marches On

She walked herself down the aisle.
Alone.
Nobody held it together, except her.
Bittersweet tears mixed with drops of rain as I watched our beautiful warrior princess boldly step into her purpose, wearing Converse high-tops, in his memory.
Oh, I’m not sad. This is everything we prayed and dreamed for her. I’m exceedingly thankful.
But there’s always—always—a mournful little voice saying, “he should be here.”
Yet time marches on, and so do we. Weddings, babies, graduations, funerals…
Sunrise. Sunset. Sunrise. Sunset.
Swiftly fly the years;
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears.
Seasons keep changing. The sun keeps rising and setting. Spectacularly significant moments keep happening all around us.
In these moments, I have a choice: gaze longingly into the review mirror at the sunset, or fix my gaze toward the sunrise.
I’m grateful for the rear-view. It gives me perspective, as I look back and recognize that every good and perfect gift I’ve experienced was given by the hand of the Father, who does not change like shifting shadows…
However, a journey is meant to be traveled by looking ahead, with only occasional glances behind. I don’t want to be so fixated on the past that I miss new treasures along the way.
There will probably be another sunset tomorrow, but if I miss the opportunity to be fully present today, I’ll miss the beauty of this moment.
And what a breathtaking moment it was!
