Open Letter to My Daughters

Marry a guy like your daddy.

I know you already know that. But by the time you’re ready to marry you may have forgotten a few things, so I decided to give you some advice based on the man he was and what he prayed over you.

Marry a worshipper of Jesus. It doesn’t matter if he can carry a tune. We all worship something. Just be sure he has a heart of worship for God.

Marry a guy who is teachable. It’s even better if he is excited to share with you what he is learning.

Marry a guy who welcomes accountability.

Marry a guy who listens: not just to respond, but to understand.

Marry a guy with a great work ethic. Money isn’t important, but hard work is.

Marry a guy who keeps his priorities straight. God, you, family, work, recreation – in that order.

Marry a guy who is faithful, faithful, faithful… no matter what.

Marry a guy who notices sunsets and sunrises, rainbows and constellations. Also, make sure he notices other things, like your favorite flower and the color of your eyes when you cry.

Marry a guy who listens to decent music. Angry music makes for angry emotions.

Marry a guy who says “I love you.” Not just “love you too.” And not just to you, but to his mother and his siblings and your siblings…

Marry a guy who brings you coffee. It’s the little things that make a difference in the mundane.

Marry a guy who asks you how you’re doing and how you slept and how you’re feeling.

Marry a guy who comes around, not just when things are fun and exciting, but also when things are messy and hard.

Marry a guy who loves children. It’s even better if he likes teenagers. You’ll be thankful for this later.

Marry a guy who never raises his voice to you, no matter how exasperating you can be.

Marry a guy who speaks respectfully to his mother, and to you, and to others in front of you.

Marry a guy who brags on you, way more than he brags about himself. He should be proud of you, your talents, abilities and contributions to the world. On that note, marry a guy who is humble.

Marry a guy who thinks you are a prize. He won’t treat you like a possession, he’ll treat you like a princess.

Marry a guy who has strong hands, but would never use them to hurt a female. Not even his sister.

Marry a guy who will hold you, even when you’re being prickly.

Marry a guy who says he’s sorry without any qualifications or excuses. If he loves you, hurting you will bring him pain. Also, be sure you both know how to forgive.

Marry a guy who has proven he loves you enough to make sacrifices for you.

Marry a guy who isn’t afraid to pursue you in an appropriate way. The right one won’t make you pursue him.

Marry a guy who will lead his family spiritually with humble, servant-leadership.

Marry a guy who reads his Bible.

Marry a guy who prays for you and with you.

Marry a guy who isn’t ashamed to introduce you to his friends. Also, who isn’t ashamed to introduce his friends to Jesus.

Most of all, marry a guy who loves Jesus even more than he loves you.

Marry a guy like your daddy.
