Is God Still Good?

I first wrote these words several years ago, in the wake of an agonizing miscarriage. I’ve added to the script several times since then. Each time, after a new dimension of suffering had brought up the same haunting question; is God still good, even now?

And every time, without exception, the answer was a resounding “yes.”

Is God still good, even in this?

There are so many things I don’t know. So many questions to which I wish I had answers. But this one thing I do know:

God is good ALL the time.

Not just when circumstances go my way.

Not only when blessings abound.

When there is more week than money, God is still good.

When trusted friends forsake me, God is still good.

When I’ve watched my beautiful sister die, God is still good.

When my precious child is suffering, God is still good.

When I cry all alone at my daughter’s grave, God is still good.

When unfair gossip swirls about us, God is still good.

When the prodigal son doesn’t come home, God is still good.

When other people disappoint me, God is still good.

When the hospital bills are piling up, God is still good.

When another deeply desired pregnancy ends in loss, God is still good.

When I face, once more, the uprooting of my family, God is still good.

When everything we’ve sacrificed seems to be for naught, God is still good.

When the answer to my desperate plea is “no,” God is still good.

When the man I was supposed to grow old with is gone before his hair turns gray, God is still good.

When my body lets me down and he’s not here to care for me, God is still good.

When loss upon loss hits like ocean waves, God is still good.

When an end to the suffering seems never to come, God is still good.

When every circumstance tries to deny God’s goodness, God is still good.

When the pain is so deep I can’t even pray, God is still good.

When I’ve waited so long, I’ve given up hope, God is still good.

When I don’t know how to face another day, God is still good.

When He’s all I’ve got left, and I find He’s enough, God is still good.

All the time…

No matter what.

God is still good.
